How Do I Find a Mediator?

Family mediators can help you resolve issues about family law matters such as parenting, child support, spousal support and division of assets and debts.  They can also assist you with your communication with one another.

Here are a couple of ways to find a Family Mediator that is right for you:

1)         Family Justice Services offers mediation services to parents at no cost.  To qualify for this service, at least one parent must have a gross annual income under $40,000 per year, the parents must have a child or children under 18 years of age and there cannot be any court orders in effect stating that the parents can’t be in the same room together.  To set up mediation, contact Family Justice Services in Edmonton at 780-427-8329 or for areas outside of Edmonton call 403-340-7187 (http://www.albertacourts.ab.ca/fjs/adr.php#family-mediation).

2)         If you do not qualify for mediation through Family Justice Services, you can hire a private mediator.  Mediator’s fees vary and are based on an hourly rate or flat fee.  Some may ask for a retainer and some don’t.  Family mediators have a variety of backgrounds, but all should have training and be accredited in Family Mediation (see “Why Choose Us” http://www.garneaumediation.cawhy-choose-us/).  I think it is important for you to talk to a few mediators and find someone who is a good fit for both of you.  At Garneau Mediation Services, we offer a 20 minute no-charge, confidential phone consultation to give you the opportunity to ask questions and get to know us.  A list of family mediators that specialize in Parenting and Separation and Divorce mediation can be found on the Alberta Family Mediation Society website at www.afms.ca.

If you would like to book a free 20 minute phone consultation with us, go online to http://www.garneaumediation.cabook-a-consultation/ or call our office at 780-417-3119.  We offer daytime, evening and weekends appointments.
